Rains Intimacy
What is Rains Intimacy?
When I talk about intimacy, I notice that at first people usually think about sex. Generally, when I hear people talk about sex it has nothing to do with intimacy. Some people think intimacy is closeness with family, friends, or others. Let’s be clear what we’re talking about in order to share an intimate understanding.
Rains Intimacy is communication that provides the greatest possible material satisfaction, dissolves the self illusion as part of an overall practice of mental clarity, understanding, and virtue.
This kind of intimacy is the heart of what makes familiarity worthwhile. Rains intimacy is what makes life worthwhile.
These are carefully chosen words, and their meaning could escape anyone. Let this definition be broken down in an act of intimacy between us: writer and reader. First, we will briefly review what the practices of the Rains Method are, because practicing intimacy depends on them. Next we will discuss how to practice Intimacy specifically. We will then discuss how this fits concretely and usable into your daily life in order to end distress.
One Problem
The problem that is cured by the Rains Method is called “Crushing Chronic Distress.” This is a state of subjective stress that incorporates anxiety, depression, confusion, and all manner of mental distress. Distress is deeply uncomfortable, constant, and debilitating, and constant. It is the only real problem humanity faces, because the other “problems,” such as old age, disease, and death can not be eliminated. Distress can.
One Cause
The cause of crushing chronic distress is a natural and health perceptual-mental-action feedback loop of Wanting that has run wildly haywire, causing a lot of extra mental and emotional baggage and mistakes (known as Crushing CHronic Distress). Wanting means “me see, me like, me must get.” Wanting can also mean, “me see, me no like, me must avoid.” Although they have great survival and social usefulness, due to the confusing nature of our modern environment, they no longer apply in a way that leads to happiness. Internally, wanting often applies to wanting, not wanting to not wanting, wanting to not wanting, and not wanting to wanting. In short, we have become lost due to inner overpopulation and dysregulation of wanting within our minds.
One Cure
The Rains Method is a set of practices that work together for the specific purpose of ending crushing chronic distress. The Rains Method does not aim to do anything else such as make us rich, handsome, pretty, popular, well spoken… or even happy. Any ulterior motive will be just another hindrance to let go of on the path. You will see that crushing chronic distress is caused by wanting a reality that you can not have – which is any reality other than this one right here! The Sixth Understanding of the Rains Method is “life is perfect” – reality is perfect – and that your best self will emerge from intimacy with reality, and it is greater than anything you want or imagine.
One of Eight Core Practices of the Rains Method, Including Intimacy
These Eight Practices can be divided into three groups: Mental Clarity, Understanding, and Virtue.
- Mental Clarity Practices empty the mind of confused thoughts, emotions, and anxieties
- Meditative Absorption
- Awareness
- Understanding Practice creates a bridge of insight between deep meditative absorption and our familiar mental busyness
- Life is Crushing Chronic Distress
- Wanting causes Crushing Chronic Distress
- Life is change
- There is no self in life
- Life is empty
- Life is perfect
- Virtue practices deliver the base of Mental Clarity and the atmosphere of Understanding to daily life – right here and now in order to cure Crushing Chronic Distress:
- Acting to end Crushing Chronic Distress
- Intending to end Crushing Chronic Distress
- Engaging the material world to end Crushing Chronic Distress
- Managing our bodies to end Crushing Chronic Distress
- Practicing Intimacy to end Crushing Chronic Distress
Principles of the Method
Eight Interdependent Core Practices
These Eight Core Practices are interdependent and inter-developmental. Meaning Awakening requires a concert of all of them, tuning each other and reaching chechendo in order to finally cure Crushing Chronic Distress and become appreciate intimately the flawless perfection of the world as-it-is.
Rains Method Not For Pleasure or Pain
Unlike many modern meditations, therapies, and -isms, products, services, relationships, the Rains Method is not about feeling good, having fun, or even being at peace. Recall that the Second Understanding “Wanting causes crushing chronic distress.” Quite simply, the desire to feel good, more often than not, causes us to feel bad. The Rains Method is more about curiosity about the nature of the world, the courage to face, and the depth of intimacy that makes it all worthwhile – not “feeling good.” As the quest goes on, you will find that reality itself as-it-is is the greatest pleasure of all. Whatever’s happening within it is just the flavor of the month.
Likewise the Method is not for causing pain, dragging yourself through the much, exploring guilt, fascinating over our demons, reliving our trauma, conditioning ourselves for future difficulty, self-denial, or any other form of self neglect. This Method is more about deconditioning ourselves.
Intimacy with Change is the End of Distress
The final, lasting solidification of this experience of perfection we call “awakening.” This method is in fact the long way to pleasure far deeper than sensory pleasure. Once you awaken you will always feel good… enough! That is as good as it can possibly get, and you’ll be doing better than almost every living person at that point, believe it or not.
Satisfaction, which is pleasure that does not cause an appetite for more pleasure, is derived from knowing the great dance of birth and death in this life for what it is. Birth and death of a movie, relationship, hot dog, party, good mood, bad mood, etc. Everything is born and everything dies.
You need look no further than your own mind to know that birth and death are so pervasive, so interdependent, that “Life is Change,” as the understanding goes. This does not mean change exists in life. This means that there is nothing, anywhere, ever, that is not change. In other words there is no such thing as stability. That is not real. Permanence. Not real. There is no such thing as constancy. These are made up concepts in our heads (which as concepts are also changing in meaning moment to moment!) The search for stability, permanence, or even a single subatomic particle in the universe lacking constant change will be a great disappointment to you.
True intimacy means giving up everything you know and love in every moment so that you can be closer to the world and the world can be closer to you. You have to even give up what I just said! We must keep this in mind when we practice Rains Intimacy, because it is only upon ceaseless change that we can trust our heart’s awakening to perfect satisfaction with perfect faithfulness. This is stable. It will never change.
Intimacy with Emptiness is the End of Distress
If you consider what I am saying, that everything is change, you will be led to the fifth Understanding: “the world is empty.” In a world of pervasive, relentless change, ultimately there can’t be any “things,” objects, people, moods, ideas, because they are constantly changing in every single way. There is no “me” and “it.” This is in fact the true nature of the world – empty. Philosophers call this non-duality, but our understanding is more… dimensional. You do not need to write or think philosophically to see this, you need only practice Rains Meditation in absorption.
Change and emptiness are important, because an understanding of this change and emptiness leads to the dissolution of grasping. It’s like if you see a well is dry, you stop attempting to draw water from it. You simply will not grasp to that cheesecake, that man or woman, that drug, that money if you understand that they are more or less illusions. Understanding the world will end many of your worldly problems, as it turns out.
Rains Method of this Material World
Now. The Rains Method promotes one of the Core Practices of the Rains Method is “Materialism.” This will usually include making money, saving some money, establishing protection from legal and financial threats, consuming goods and services, arranging for comforts, and providing for others.
Simply because the things we want may be illusions does not mean that we stop working and striving. Simply because curing crushing chronic distress is a subtle art of Intimacy with danger, and that often means encountering illusion, if only to dispel illusion.
The Rains Method causes work harder and wiser, precisely because we know that what we want is an illusion and our wanting is unwise – because it is only with that knowledge that we can truly know and understand what we are working on and who we are as the worker. It is also true that the fiercest passion in the world is the one without wanting. That’s how I wrote this. This is a method that celebrates hard, gainful work, close relationships, and worldly participation.
It isn’t hard, meaningful work and deep engagement in relationships that causes crushing chronic distress, it is hiding from the reality that we can ever own them – or ever could. You are going to cut down your possessiveness once and for all when you finally realize for yourself that there is no “you” to own anything anyway. This knowledge is the ultimate existential wealth, and there’s nothing wrong with adorning it with material wealth as it arises.
This Method is the Stage for Intimacy
The Rains Method forms the stage for mastery of Intimacy, and Intimacy is part of the stage for the other Core Practices. Rains Intimacy brings the greatest material satisfaction in the world. All of the material in the universe: cities on Mars and all over the galaxy, macaroni with cheese, travel faster than the speed of light, cities of gold, limitless eons of sexual perpetually escalating ecstasy is not only useless, but toxic for our humanity in the universal throngs of Crushing Chronic Distress – because we will continue to want it to be otherwise.
Wealth is good. Sex is good. Praise is fine. Gear and toys are cool. I want all that, too – and I pursue them all daily. The Rains Method, in some sense, is about owning your things for what they are rather than them owning you into believing you’re something you’re not.
Confusion, hatred, and craving weigh heavily in on our every breath, all of us, and yet it can be seen if you intimately look that perfect satisfaction is everywhere, inexhaustible, and utterly quenching. The practice of Rains Intimacy is to communicate with the world beautifully, thus the world will awaken us what real beauty truly is.

RAINS METHOD
Five+ Practices of the Rains Method
Enlightenment is a concert between several practices that together leads to the end of suffering.
Meditation Practice, which gives rise to Samadhi, the purest result of the practice of Rains Meditation, suspends suffering, but it is not enlightenment, because Samadhi depends on the balancing of force of meditation to survive.
Understanding Practice of the Rains Method: knowing without doubt that life is Dissatisfying, Change, Lacking in Self, Empty, and Perfect suspends suffering, but it is not enlightenment, because Wisdom depends on the maintenance of contemplation.
Intimacy Practice of the Rains Method: whole hearted giving and receiving with the world suspends suffering, but it is not enlightenment, because Intimacy depends on the ability to truly listen.
Awareness Practice of the Rains Method: seeing and accepting the world for what it is, suspends suffering, but it is not enlightenment, because Awareness depends on letting go of distraction.
Each Practice of the Rains Method, if we work hard, will pause suffering, but no single Practice will result in Enlightenment. Rather than seek to be enlightened, we should always seek to practice. Practicing each, our whole practice towards enlightenment grows stronger from the strengths within it. In order to end suffering we must develop mastery of all of the Practices together. The Practices of the Rains Method are like a family of wrongfully imprisoned geniuses or soldiers who put their powers together in order to win their freedom as a team. The practices have to coordinate with each other Intimately, with Awareness, Clarity, Knowledge, and the rest.
Full Set of Practices of the Rains Method (current March 16):
- Meditation
- Awareness
- Intimacy
- Understanding
- Action
The following practices are being considered: Intuition, Intention, Chemistry, Materialism, and Morality.
There will likely be about a dozen practices total. These dozen practices together, the Rains Method, will be all of the insight anyone will need to do to let go of wanting, become enlightened, and end all suffering in your life. Judge for yourself.
RAINS MEDITATION
What is Rains Meditation?
Rains Meditation is a physical and mental process. It is the “activity” of being inactive. It is the most effective and direct standby method for delivering the meditator directly from a state of Wanting to a state of completely lacking Wanting, which is called Samadhi.
What is Samadhi?
This Samadhi serves as the “proof” of Rains Understanding: the truths of suffering, change, lack of self, emptiness, and perfection. With Samadhi, you will see – for yourself, without believing me – that the Rains Method leads to the truth. Understanding works with the other three+ Practices of the Rains Method over time to achieve Enlightenment: which is final deliverance from suffering: game over, you win.
It all starts with the proof. Otherwise we’re just consuming more confused beliefs. The proof is not in the words I say or my gestures. The proof is within your mind – within this moment – the only reliable place. The proof is Samadhi. But this same proof also lies within the very messy pudding of these minds of yours and mine.
It is the avoidance of this mess that has led to the present state of the world, our country, our communities, families, and our minds. That should be a sobering statement. The only way to see what our mind is up to is to stop acting out according to its whims and motivations – and that means to be truly physically inactive while being truly aware.
Therefore, the physical stage of Rains Meditation is simply not to move the body, and not to speak.
Samadhi Not Sexy
Samadhi is a glimpse or “proof” of the reality of deliverance from suffering and the characteristics of suffering (suffering, change, lack of self, emptiness, and perfection) that all inner and outer experiences abide by. This may sound “sexy” or something, but Samadhi is not sexy or exotic, nor is enlightenment. It is earthy, and it is within you.
Samadhi is simply a naturally occurring state of mental emptiness that will happen in wisps and waves if you sit still and do not speak for significant periods of time – regularly. In fact, Samadhi has already “happened to you” several times. These moments will lack suffering that contains suffering, lack self, lack the absence of change, and they will be perfect. Samadhi lacks and expresses all of these things at once! It is best to ignore all these claims of mine and see for yourself.
The “Path” to Samadhi
Witnessing Samadhi may take only an hour or it may take a few years. It doesn’t matter whatsoever. I advise you to be persevering in your meditation practice. That’s what matters, because within the silent stillness of Rains Meditation proves that the world is perfect, exactly as it is, in this and all moments awaits, and you will find it -if- you persevere and take the practice seriously. It is important not to approach Rains Meditation as a tourist for too long. Rather, approach it as you would a song you’ve always known, but have momentarily forgotten.
Samadhi is Not “Passive,” Dopey,” or “Indifferent”
Samadhi is far from lacking in thoughts, emotions, and action. Samadhi is recognizing that thoughts, emotions, and actions do not exist as separate things. Thus Samadhi is a state of mental emptiness which contains all available things. Samadhi also means readiness. Samadhi is volcanic.
Six Stages of Rains Meditation
- Environment
- Posture
- Breath
- Breath-Posture Intimacy
- Mind
- Samadhi
We have currently in our Group covered Meditation Posture in a Chair (see the handout and ask about social media posts for a review of posture). We have touched somewhat on all of these Six Stages of Rains Meditation. We will more. We need to understand Rains Method Meditation is not only the balancing of the posture, it is the balancing of all six of these stages like a circle made of six keystones, and even more so the balancing of them.
Samadhi Alone is Useless
In order for Rains Meditation to successfully give rise to Enlightenment, it must have support from other parts of our lives. (Samadhi without support, by the way, I believe is called Vipassana). This is why the Rains Method is composed of the Five+ Practices of Rains Meditation.
Full Set of Practices of the Rains Method (current March 16):
- Meditation
- Awareness
- Intimacy
- Understanding
- Action
Shouldn’t we know why we are meditating in the first place so our meditation is strong and aimed directly at the annihilation of the cause of suffering rather than some kind of miserable plea bargain with reality that we’re offered from all sides? We meditate to develop Samadhi. But the whole practice is about living Samadhi at all times, come heaven, hell, or high water. The irony of the Rains Method quest is that the perfect Samadhi of Enlightenment we are striving to live is nothing other than… THIS!
AWARENESS
SECOND CORE PRACTICE OF THE JES METHOD
Prepared for the March 2, 2026 Group Meditation
AI-Free (screen recorded on YouTube)
What is Awareness?
Awareness is the experience of becoming the world. Ordinarily, there is this and that; me and you. This is the experience of separation. Awareness is the experience of letting go of separation and becoming a part of the world. What is the world? It is… THIS! There is no that, no hot, no cold, no happy, no sad to be found anywhere in this world. There is only what there is: what-is, as-it-is.
Writing on my patio now… The feeling of the keys crushing under my fingers, the wayward song of the windchimes, the shadows dancing on the grass below the swaying branches and amber lighting. I watch them all lovingly in order to know myself, and let go… with Awareness.
Awareness is a refuge from our harassing thoughts and emotions, and from the gruel of our daily work. When I am speaking to you and I look deeply into your eyes, I have nothing in the world to want or fear, because of the depth of Awareness. With Awareness we come to see that the only pattern to life is the absence of patterns, and we are a note in a great symphony of windchimes, which lacking patterns is always without comparison: perfect.
We arrive at this state by working to pay supreme attention at all times to our senses when we cut wood, eat, and hug. We direct our attention to appreciating the world as-it-is using the energy that is freed up in Meditation… as if firing our last shot to save our lives. That is how I choose these words. To do that we must completely abandon how we want it to be. And anyway, reality couldn’t care less.
Meditation gives you a break from grasping; Awareness allows you to truly, deeply touch the world. Meditation, grasping, and the other Core Practices of the Jes Method work in like a band of musicians that delivers us from Dissatisfaction. This is a little poetic because I am seeking to reach you. In the end, Meditation is simply, “doing nothing,” Awareness is simply, “watching what you’re doing,” and Understanding is simply, “knowing what you’re doing.”
Bringing Awareness Down to Earth
When we go about our day there is much we do not notice. When we work, speak to each other, or hug each other, there is much we do not notice. Thus, we miss the ability to avoid harm and to provide love on many levels. Our lack of Awareness ensures that we continue to suffer – and suffer worse and worse with each missed molecule and monument of life.
Overlooking the sadness in your loved ones eyes that they hide successfully (or of hiding our sadness from a loved one), not remembering to lock the door to your home when your children are to be left alone for the night, not seeing the left hook coming in the boxing ring, or missing the moment a dragonfly takes flight from the petal of a lotus flower all embody what is meant by lacking awareness. But it’s way worse… the fact is we are missing our lives… This also means that most of the beauty life has to offer is ours to awaken to, and taking action to practice Awareness, along with a handful of additional practices, will awaken beauty of unfamiliar vastness.
How Awareness is Developed
Meditation, the First Core Practice
The first step in developing Awareness is to physically stop the body and quiet the mind on a regular basis, such as thirty minutes a week, or much better, every day. It is necessary to stop the muscles of the body, because Awareness is not dull due to a lack of activity, it is dull because our minds are overactive. This is true even if you are sleepy, depressed, or emotionally numb at this time. Sedated states are the aftermath of overactivity.
In order to be aware, we must stop moving the body and wavering the mind. Physical and mental stability actually depend on rhythmic instability to stabilize! The supreme unstable rhythm is called the breath, and we can discuss the breath in greater detail at another time. The breath and the body are complimentary forces of change, together they become still when we truly notice them. Thus Meditation leads to Awareness, and Awareness leads to deeper Meditation.
Understanding, the Final Core Practice
It is not enough for us to meditate, because Meditation will simply become another habit or drug that supports our ongoing lack of Awareness and suffering. A meditator who does not understand the world is like someone who cleans their house every day only to divert reeking sewage throughout the same house every night. Over time the mess builds up just the same as someone who never meditated at all in the first place! This is the plight of most of the meditators who have ever lived in one form or another. We do not want a comfortable delusion, we want reality as-it-is!
The purpose of the Jes Method is not to make Dissatisfaction manageable generally like religious practices, psychotherapy, alcohol and drug consumption, video games, crystal healing, aroma therapy, ecstatic dance, hanging out with people who tell us we are better than we think we are, psychiatric medication, sexual indulgence, yoga, thrill seeking, doting on a pet, hot baths, venting, workaholism, working out, abstract philosophy. These things are fine. I do all of them! If that’s what you want you need only seek out one of these specialists. I do not live or teach to manage Dissatisfaction. My life, Awareness, and the Jes Method exist to eliminate Dissatisfaction… and that’s not the comfy way… it is freedom from caring either way.
The method of developing Understanding in the Jes Method is to consider very carefully with great doubt and openmindedness an “unfamiliar proposal” about life set forth by the Method, and by Jes. The proposal must be unfamiliar in order to end Dissatisfaction, because you can see for yourself that all existing familiar proposals and -isms may merely or reshape Dissatisfaction. Take what works, and leave the rest. The unfamiliar understandings of the Jes Method are five:
- Life is Dissatisfaction, through and through
- Life is Change, through and through
- There is No Self in this world, through and through
- Life is Empty, through and through
- Life is Perfect, through and through
I know for certain that you do not share these views as I do. Perhaps you are right and I am wrong. I don’t know. I simply know that everything in the world confirms these patterns, nothing does not, these patterns are not known to people as true, and recognizing these patterns in the world will end Dissatisfaction. To truly know the truth this unfamiliar proposal is exactly enlightenment.
Awareness Isn’t Easy – It’s Easy!
These things are pretty easy to nod to and understand if you consider. To know them truly is a very different matter. The quest to know this world as perfect seems to work against a lot of conditioning that causes the world to seem imperfect (this must become that, you must be different). The practice of knowing how this world comes in contact with us, which is Awareness, will cause us to know the perfection of the world.
Confusion does not work against Awareness… they work together. Confusion and Awareness depend on each other. So take heart. No matter how your life is going. No matter who you are or what you have done, what you have or lack, the lasting and perfect peace I speak of is already yours… to notice. Awareness is the practice of taking our relationship with the world back from confusion – not of “getting” the world. As one of my teachers once said, “the worst horse is the best horse.” Enlightenment is within reach of every human being on earth, including you reading this right this moment – and is often achieved by the least expected human being.
Another Important Way to Develop Awareness
Community, the Third Core Practice
Because becoming enlightened is usually met as a great challenge (it was for me!), we must use every tool at our disposal to become aware – every breath. Literally everything must become an instrument for our enlightenment, and the seeing of the world and the people around us as instruments of enlightenment is necessary to achieve enlightenment – and that includes me. Just as you do this you will come to see that you are an instrument that exists to serve the enlightenment of others. This is a good way to love and feel love no matter who you do or do not have, even if you are hated.
It is this very ethic that defines a community of people who are practicing – or are aware of the prospect of practicing – towards enlightenment, together – precisely the ethic of the Jes Method Community.
Simply practicing the appropriate Meditation together, looking at different practices and views together, and applying Meditation and Understanding to a set in motion a new way of relating, and living, is all it takes – and this magic is underway here and now for us. Right now. It takes no effort but to show up.
The Other Core Practices of the Jes Method
There are several other practices that intimately work together to finally end Dissatisfaction, they work together interdependently to end Dissatisfaction. I have introduced four at this point. That is a good place to start. At this stage place almost all of your focus on Meditation. Awareness is a superb place to apply the good results of Meditation to the world, and thus from the world to receive good results.
SLAVERY, PSYCHEDELICS, & AWAKENING
For my friend Micky. What suffering is, how psychedelics may help, and how suffering ends. 5 pages. AI-free writing process on Youtube. Also relevant: video “Meditation vs Psychedelics. Essay download and video below.
Slavery
Defining Slavery
Slavery is the process of maintaining wanting of the world against the information that the world will never provide it. This information that the world will not provide what we want is actually… all of the information in the world! The maintenance of this comparison and the drama of being caught within it requires more wanting, and the wanting requires more maintenance. No amount of money, sex, love, fame will cool it. Do not underestimate the pain and pervasiveness of enslavement to wanting the world to be other than it is. All you need to do is look.
Are you perfectly satisfied with your looks? Your marriage? Your sex life? Your money? Your car? Your health? Your ability to play that sport or perform that work? Your family? Your friends? This essay? Your standing in the group?
If you are not satisfied, this means that within your mind exists an image of comparison where you are more beautiful, loved, gratified, gifted, rich, and that in your mind this more will cause greater satisfaction. Every part of that understanding is one hundred percent wrong, because the persistence of dissatisfaction is indifferent to the fantasy we had about this or that “gain” solving the problem.
The simple situation of wanting is that it necessarily triggers a simulation of an alternate wanted reality, while the person wanting is of course doomed to dwell in the comparatively unwanted reality, which most people look upon with private grimness as “life.” With Awakening you will discover that life is not imperfect. Life is perfect.
The Nature of Slavery
The mental juggling of simulating wanted-reality within the mind – which is really a wanted fantasy, and shuffling around trying to make life live up to a fantasy when fantasy can never become reality because fantasy and reality depend on and originate from one another. Which is a fancy way of saying fantasizing is truly insane!
Simply put, our fantasies are changing at the whim of reality: of our spouse’s mood, of what’s cool, of our health. Look closely, and you will see without believing me, that attainment is not satisfaction… In fact attainment is little more than climactic dissatisfaction! The result is that the boulder never stays on top of the hill, and we go on laboring and suffering until we die crying, trying to pin our name tag to a gust of swirling mist that is laughing at us. Enlightenment is not mystical, it is nothing more than laughing along.
The Severity of Slavery
You need do nothing more than look around for yourself to see the horror that all of humanity is enslaved to this process, as well as when I say that for most people there is hardly a single a noticeable moment of freedom from this slavery from birth to death. But this is hard to do when we have subscribed to the death march ourselves, with all due respect.
Every single other challenge humanity faces compares as a dust ball to a galaxy when we understand the profundity of suffering. Beyond that most of those other challenges we face such as injustice or insufficient resources have been created by the millennia of culturally-evolving suffering coming to a head – yours and mine. I wish there was an easier way, but I must agree with the old cliche: the only way is to “be the change we wish to create.”
The upshot is that life is pretty good as-it-is! Actually, it’s perfect! Come and see. There’s not so much to freedom… We have only to unforget reality, and the only way to do so is passively – but not inactively! We don’t have to create reality. We can’t. Reality is already here… even your fantasies are part of reality. The beauty of perfection is that it’s already here. Enlightenment, like love, is about letting go.
This means that pursuing enlightenment is the easiest path in life by far – in the beginning, the middle, and the end. Emancipation from slavery is enlightenment, and enlightenment means freedom to live within the world as-it-is unburdened and free of all want, and this is possible. It’s not a woo woo aspiration. True happiness is not beyond us.
Psychedelics
One way modern people get a taste of remembering perfection is using psychedelic drugs, sweat lodges, tantric sex, extreme fasting, certain yogas, and many other conditional interventions to glimpse this perfection. A psychedelic is an “external” force which comes in contact with us and causes reality to be seen differently, and an awakening psychedelic experience disrupts our cage of wanting, and causes us to glimpse reality more clearly, more as-it-is.
Most of us have never had a noticeable break from fantasy and slavery. I notice a lot of experimental people using mushrooms, LSD, DMT, and other hallucinogens. Some just like the cool visuals. Many others feel they are having some kind of reprieve from their habitual way of seeing things – a profound reprieve, an annihilation of their habits – of themselves! There are several important things to notice about the accounts of spiritual psychedelics that are worth putting forth in evaluating their role in the end of suffering and the ignition of enlightenment, and this would include my own personal account with psychedelics.
These experiences seem to replace “reality is not good enough, I want that fantasy,” with things like “there is neither reality or non-reality” or “everything is a fantasy” or “I learned that I am the universe,” and many other fundamentally disruptive or illuminating insights. These statements may be true. These statements may be a glimpse of liberation. But so long as there is a “big deal” in the comparison between the psychedelic experience and the sober experience, there exists a division between states – real and fantasy. The trick to enlightenment is that the division is a fantasy, and may signal that we need a deeper look than the one loaned by contact with special encounters with special materials.
It is often true that when altering – or clarifying – our awareness of reality through psychedelics that following this insight we may set forth to make changes such as quitting smoking or street drugs or being more loving towards our children, or even less greedy. And that is good, I’d say. Psychedelics do have to power to set in motion a cascade of experiences that lead to awakening, and for many Westerners since the 60s, the crest of the waterfall to enlightenment is encountering a path to non-dual perception that vanishes behind them with each step, leaving a persistent absence of wanting.
There are many paths that offer this: Zen Buddhism, Jainism, even Christianity. In fact, all religions or ways are a scaffolding to the demolition of fantasy and delusion. The unfortunate fact is that people who practice them may demolish certain fantasies, but rather than let go of that material, reinforce the scaffolding. I believe religion is often a very positive part of life; nonetheless in the scope of true happiness and enlightenment, religious practice is the replacement of one cage with another different stupidity. And then we include others.
What is the Jes Method
The Jes Method most closely ties to Zen Buddhism, which is my background of over two decades. The idea here is to systematically question all aspects of fantasy, including the tool of awakening, in this case called the Jes Method. The tool is used to let go of fantasy, practiced, adhered to, devoted to, but as fantasy is dissolved the Method evolves in a process of gradual dissolution. Such that I once identified my practice as Zen Buddhism, and now I understand it to be seeing what is. And share it as something relevant to the changing times stripped of some of the solid scaffolding that have inevitably become entrenched in modern Zen. Wisdom is a process of death and rebirth just like anything else.
Back to Psychedelics
The limitations with psychedelic drug use lie in its dependence on contact with the drug. If the drug is taken once, and one lets go of fantasy, it is the nature of the world to reassert fantasy, re-enslave us, because fantasizing is sophisticated, vastly accumulated, and effectively ingeniously cunning. If one does the drug repetitively, at best it becomes a tension between the clarifying forces of the drug and the confusing forces of our fantasizing habits when sober. Here’s the kicker: that tension itself is governed by fantasy (the clarity… over there).
Another note is that while psychedelics may be capable of stripping or modifying or dissolving our fantasizing, true dissolution of fantasy has to exist within the natural stream of the generation of fantasy. In other words, fantasy must be destroyed as it comes up breath by breath. If it is not, it will lurk and re-institute a model of happiness that is based on duality – and that is certainly the psychedelic model of happiness – and unfortunately any experience based on duality necessitates fantasy, enslavement, and misery. In effect, most spiritual psychedelic experiences might be chalked up to “window shopping.” Practical, masterable awareness of the perfect, non-dual nature of life is one of the things that makes the Jes Method somewhat unique.
So here’s a litmus test, if the psychedelic experience contains anything, it is not truly liberating. If following the psychedelic experience anything comes into existence, it is not finally liberating. It might seem to us as if the bar for enlightenment is much higher than a vacation to South America and a vial of toad piss. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Awakening
Awakening is knowing reality as-it-is. It is the absence of fantasy. And Awakening lacks the labor of maintaining fantasy. This labor is emotionally devastating, and the cause of all mental illness. Awakening is becoming this world, true happiness, and your birthright that will be put before you from the most unlikely of sources…
I can not tell you what awakening is really, because language is a dualistic function. It is easier to say that it is the end of all suffering or to look you in the eyes.
The Swift and Sure Way to Enlightenment
Fantasy has grown within us due to unenlightened contact with a variety of poisons: other people, intoxication from foods and lights and drugs, technology, unhealthy relationships, unhealthy social organizations, and so on.
It is not so hard to buffer ourselves from these poisons if the buffers are of the right character and position, meaning if they are wise. Wisdom means mixing enlightened perception with unenlightened perception in a way that enlightens perception. That set of buffers is the Jes Method. The method I recommend for the swiftest enlightenment is to substitute the core representatives of the fantasy with core representatives of reality. There are several representatives. I’ll describe two.
Meditation
The first representative of reality is silent and still meditation. This is nothing special. Meditation effortlessly causes a starvation of the engines that drive fantasy. Just being inactive physically, deprives our mind of the impulse to fantasize, because fantasy always partly depends on being reinforced by correlate with physical activity.
The silence of meditation works through a similar biofeedback mechanism. If you can’t talk about a fantasy, you can’t reinforce it. For this to work, your mind must be relaxed and alert for you to witness every day the nuances and details of the dissolution of our grasp on fantasy, and that dissolution is known as true pleasure. This is a method which can be relied upon for compounding results that can never be co-opted back into the hands of fantasy if this and the other representatives of reality are practiced skillfully. The fruit of this exercise is also the uncorrupted essence of all spiritual movements and experiences.
This meditation is a skill very few people have. Awareness is a skill few people have. Intimate communication is a skill few people have. Absorption into work is a skill few people have and viewing the world is a skill few people have. Even least is the ability to understand the world, just as I share this understanding with you now. Meditation and understanding are the ones I am most masterful at, the ones most needed by all of us, and the ones I teach. My only credential is what you see.
To know one thing is to know the world.
-Buddha
There are half a dozen or so “representatives of reality” or posts of refuge in this great sea of suffering that have the power to turn the tide of suffering and give rise to enlightenment. I will mention one more here.
Understanding
Meditation itself is just another drug like psychedelics or sex. You feel calm, you let some stuff go, you collect yourself, have an insight or two, maybe zone or trip out a bit. In order to really use meditation to end suffering, the “space” created within the mind, the “glimpses” of reality, must be brought into concert with reality as we receive it as living beings getting happy and angry and tired and such. This is where understanding is essential, because the clarity of meditation is bum rushed by our habitual wanting and misery the minute we get off the cushion. Understanding has been made very simple. There are five qualities of this life which must be truly known in order to meditate at all times, fully protected from suffering, and perhaps even able to impart this enlightenment to others. These are the qualities of life to be fully understood:
- Life is Dissatisfaction
- Life is Change
- The self is not real
- Life is Empty
- Life is Perfect
The Jes Method exists to describe and demonstrate the nature of the world in conjunction with meditation, and other strategic techniques in the realms of work and love, in speech, audio, video, and writing, in order to awaken all of humanity once and for all.
